So far it's been a good convention. Saturday was the biggest day with the most people and a lot of interest in Friday almuni. The story with that is that while booking the show, we as vendors had the chance to pick certain tables, etc. We really lucked out picking Table # 19 since we were sitting in between CJ Graham (Friday the 13th Part 6), Warrington Gillette (Friday the 13th Part II) and Caroline Williams (Texas Chain Saw Masacre II) so it was good to be sitting in between them rather than not because most of the time, after the fans of the films got their autographs, they moved over to our table where Paul was sitting. I was really amazed by the loyalty of the fans and the types of posters, books and things they asked to have signed. There was this one picture that Paul nor myself have seen that can be picked up in the city of Paul standing there looking past the camera waiting for direction with his hair all messy.
Paul flew out on his own money so I was glad to see he made some money back by signing autographs and the nice thing was that he wasn't charging $20 like most of the other talent that were there. One person generously thanked Paul for not charging that amount.
It was good to see Paul connecting with some filmmakers and exchanging information. I really want to see his career proceed on with him acting full time since I feel he is a really good actor who I feel can play many different roles effectively (and we are working on his demo reel as we speak).
Also, it was good to see that this convention was very much about promoting the work of the filmmakers there and not so much themselves. A lot of these conventions you see these filmmakers and talent who are doing it for the wrong reason (fame) or for attention but it was cool to see that a lot of independent filmmakers and production companies were at this convention promoting their work that was available and not work that's so far down the road.
One of the vendors there was Blood Night, which is run by Frank Sabatella whom I have known for a few years. Even though I'm not a big fan of the trailers of Blood Night and how they were edited, I talked to Frank and I now back him one hundred percent because I now understand what he's trying to do as a filmmaker where as from the trailers online and the behind the scenes video, I didn't really like how those were edited but when I heard him explaining to Paul how they're looking to find distribution I knew that it was something I had to support - not because I felt like I needed to, but because I wanted to.
I feel this support between filmmakers who are actually doing it for the art is something that needs to be done and if filmmakers stick to that vision, then that's always a positive.
Also met my composer Mark Nadolski after e-mailing him back and forth for nearly a year getting "Loss of Hope" composed and working on various other projects. The funny thing about working with someone over the Internet is that sometimes you don't meet them until a little down the road. He's a cool dude and very much a passionate musician. He was giving away free CD's of his work to both filmmakers and those attending the convention who were walking around. I think this convention was a good place to meet because it's a big horror convention and it's in the Big Apple, unlike the last few years when it was in New Jersey and more hard to get to.
Friday was a fair amount, but Saturday a lot of people came out. The cool thing about the place was that it felt very much like a horror convention with all types of people dressed up and being a vendor and sitting back watching it all was quite interesting as well. A lot of interesting and unique people coming to these covnentions.
Overall the convention has been good so far. I highly recommend it both for the filmmakers and for the fans for when it comes back again on the East Coast.
